Winter is always one of my favorite seasons of the year, aside from the cold temperature – but hot chocolate certainly makes it better! Snowy fields of white are a perfect back drop and a great natural reflector for backlit photos. That’s why I was so excited to run out on a sunny winter day and have some fun with my own family.

I consider myself a bit of a fearless photographer, I’m not always looking for shade to place my subject in. I look for ways to highlight and accentuate my subjects – so I really love backlighting, I mean really love it! When you backlight your subject or your client, you generally leave them in the shade and shadows can often be a bit unsightly. Any other time I would usually have an assistant hold a reflector to bounce some light back on my clients but the snow does that for you and what you get are gorgeous highlights and perfectly exposed skin.

I usually photograph at really large apertures to create a whimsical backdrop so I usually overexpose the sky because I love that glow. To make sure my clients are perfectly lit, I will usually find a way to reflect light back onto my clients. I always examine my location and what it has to offer in terms of lighting, it could be the sidewalk, sand, a building wall or even window/door glass. This New England winter is proving to be quite white so it makes it a lot easier and really fun to photograph! Snow is a perfect reflector that is great for bouncing beautiful light back and it really makes what you’re photographing really glow. Since snow its a clean white surface, colors really stand out against the snow, so your backdrop has a gorgeous golden glow.

  1. Love it, I am currently in NY and just had some snow and can’t wait to get out and photograph in it as well. Your images are the perfect example of why I love snow images as well, great job!
